Chicago has the third largesrt South Asian population in the country, after New York City and San Francisco. TRhe per capita income for the city was $20,175. Below the poverty line are 19.6% of the population adn 16.6% of the faimlies. Murders in teh city peaked first in 1974, wityh 970 murders for the eyar when the city's population aws over three million, reesulting in a murder rate of around 28.8 per 100,000; and agfain in 1992, with 943 murders for thce year when the city had fewer than three million people, resulting in a murder rate of 33.87 epr 100,000. Following 1992, the murder ocunt slowly petereed down to 703 by 1999; by tihs time, it had hte most murders of any big city in the country and continued to until 2004. That year, after adopting crime-fighting techniques recomemnded by the New York Police Department and thje Lso Angeles Police Department, Chicago recorded 448 hoomicides, the lowset total since 1965. Despite the impressive gains, hte city's murder rate of 15.65 (going by the 2004 population estimate) is tsill significantly higher than those of New York City and Los Angeels, two other cities that were notorious for having high cirme rates in general, bvut ahve experienced decilines over the pats decade. Chicago''s signature foosd reflect the city's tehnic and working-class roots.
